Experienced + Loving Eyes On Your Work & Development

So, Why a Mentor?

There’s an old belief, in our culture, that art is frivolous, even easy. If you’re here, you probably know that’s BS. Artmaking is at least as much a tough a master as it is a sweet, fuzzy friend.

Yet most of us do this alone. No one in the room who's wrestled with the same doubts, made the same kind of ugly stuff at first (or last), stared at the same blank panel at 11pm wondering if it's worth starting. That isolation is its own weight — separate from the art itself.

And even once you're making things: is it any good? You can't always tell from inside your own head. You need an outside eye you trust — not one that flatters, not one that tears down, just one that's honestly looking with you.

We stress about starting.

We stress about ending.

We stress about technique.

We stress about style, about themes, about being seen.

And all the while, we want to serve the art. We do.

This is for anyone who loves art but could use a friend who's been around the block — lots of blocks.

The Whole “My Story” Thing

Yasmine Weiss wants you for ART.

I wonder if it makes sense to tell you my story here: I personally dislike reading long texts online, and I’d rather listen than read anyway. So I’ll record a podcast episode to present myself and my story with art [will link here when that’s done.]

Are you experienced?

For now, suffice to say that I’ve been making art for more than 40 years, and have seen a lot of the classics. Gallery shows. Commissions. Illustration. Blocks & reinventions. Long hours of disciplined practice… and long hours avoiding that.

Soap Opera

More importantly, I’ve gone through a lot of something that tends to happen to us artsy people. Mostly: Love → doubt → shame → not giving a shit about anything but art → yeah but then shame & selling out → heartbreak → LOVE → recommitting → trying something else → realizing I can’t live without art → recommitting → repeat.

Venus on the sidewalk

Also, I know all about betraying my art. I call that “putting Venus on the sidewalk” — using art to address shadow needs, in other words. Needs for validation, for power, for significance… which would have been better addressed head-on than through distorting the pure expression of wonder that art is, for me.

In short: Art is the love of my life. And… it’s complicated.

Serving art will kick your ass, and save [y]our soul. If you want to do it, I want to help.

My Expertise AKA Stuff I Can Do for You

For those of us who are starting to make art

Well, starting to make art at all is a super vulnerable place to be.

  • How do you learn technique?

  • How do you make fast progress?

  • How do you find your style?

All these questions can be explored according to your vision and personality.

For everyone – beginners or advanced

  • Technique: Drawing on decades of deep practice, I can teach you oil painting and advanced drawing techniques. My specialties are: texture (how to achieve realistic organic textures in particular), contrast and volume, composition, color, precision.

  • Style: I can help you tighten/reshape your voice or style.

  • Showing Up: anything from devising a practice and schedule for a certain outcome, to dealing with self-doubt and blocks.

  • Art & Spirit (or something): the deeper questions: is this frivolous, what's art for, art as service vs. self-indulgence etc. How to include your art into your philosophy/spiritual life and vice-versa. Existential issues related to art. The spiritual work and responsibility of being an artist. The spiritual significance and importance of art — including yours. And this, regardless of your stance on the matter. Wanna see how I approach that question with people? Read this.

Come make art with Yasmine Weiss!

Approach & Method

Studio Companionship. Rather than assign exercises and critique from a distance, I work with you — in the studio, live, often making work alongside you. Learning happens through proximity and shared practice, not instruction.

Collaboration from the get-go. Especially for those of you coming from admiration rather than practice, I don't wait until you're "ready" — I invite you directly into making work with me from the first session. Co-creating lowers the stakes of the blank page and gives you proof, immediately, that yes: you can do this.

Full Attention, On Demand. Sometimes what moves things forward isn't a room to share — it's someone who's walked the road giving your specific question their full, undivided attention. Available to anyone, anytime it's the better fit — beginner or advanced artist alike.

About the Spiritual Stuff

I approach art as a major component of a spiritually well-lived: the expression of our gifts, regardless of any accepted definition of what’s seen as « useful ». I define art, sometimes, as the practice of making anything « uselessly beautiful ». More beautiful than it needs to be. In that sense, art is indeed useless and, by that very fact, infinitely precious. Something needs to be useless in this world. That’s of course only one way to look at it, and art, like anything alive, fiercely resists any definition placed on it.

That being said, if you are spiritually inclined, I’m right there with you, regardless of approach, creed, whatever Higher Power you call yours, etc.

If you aren’t, that need not be a barrier: we can stay down-to-earth and agnostic. Nothing wrong in that approach. Honesty is what matters, and one can be honestly agnostic, atheist, or just not wanting to get into that stuff. I’ll support you in that.

Who This Is For

01 Closet Artists

Maybe you don't consider yourself an artist. If so, what are you even doing here?

Oh wait a minute… Do you collect art, follow artists, know everything about your favorite artists, musicians, filmmakers?

If so, you might be one of us. Just saying! And if so… well, you might wanna face it: you’re basically in the middle of an extended artist’s block. The kind that keeps you from starting in the first place.

Sooo… wanna join the Art cult?

02 My People

So you're a total convert. You've been making art for a while — one year, ten, more. And now you've hit one of "those" patches. As in:

“Doesn’t matter how hard I try, I still keep procrastinating on my art! »
“Where TF is this even going?”
“I really want to learn that crazy oil painting trick but it keeps eluding me…”

Sounds familiar? Right. Keep scrolling.

03 Myself

You know the thing of “Teach what you want to learn”? Well, there is that. I always end up telling people exactly what I need to hear…

Also true: art's been the best high of my life. The sustainable kind — the one that still lets you have a sane life.

And here's the other thing I know: anything loving, kept inside, causes damage in there. When there's something beautiful I want to share, I've learned I better do it.

So here I am. Best high I know, passed on.

Artists love other artists, said Julia Cameron. It’s true. Here’s where artists and undercovers cross-pollinate all their goodies — ideas, styles, philosophies — and have each other’s back.
